Candle Care 101: Get the Most Out of Your Deep Focus Fragrance Candle
If you're like most of us — burning the midnight oil while working on a coding sprint or cramming for finals — the right ambiance can make all the difference. That’s where our candles come in. But to get the best scent, performance, and burn time from your Deep Focus Fragrance candle, a little care goes a long way.
Here are our top candle care tips for tech-savvy students and professionals who want to get the most productivity out of their study or work session.
1. Trim Your Wick to 1/4” Before Every Burn
Seriously, every time. This isn’t just a fancy ritual — it’s essential. Trimming your wick helps control the flame size, prevents smoke, and stops soot from building up on the glass. Long wicks can lead to tunneling, flickering, and wasted wax. Use scissors or a wick trimmer and aim for 1/4” before lighting up.
2. Let It Burn Long Enough for a Full Melt Pool
This is one of the most overlooked (but most important) tips. The first time you light your 8 oz candle, let it burn until the melted wax reaches the edges of the jar — usually 2–3 hours. This is called a full melt pool, and it helps prevent tunneling (when the candle burns straight down the middle and leaves wax stuck on the sides).
Once your candle tunnels, it’s almost impossible to fix. So the first few burns are crucial for setting the stage. A full melt pool also releases the fragrance more effectively, giving you that perfect scent to power through your workflow.
3. Don’t Burn for More Than 4 Hours
Your candle may be cute, but it’s not meant to pull an all-nighter. Limit each session to 3–4 hours. This helps preserve the integrity of the wax and the wick. Plus, long burns can cause the jar to overheat or produce carbon build-up on the wick — not the clean, focused vibe we’re going for.
4. Keep It Clean and Draft-Free
Set your candle on a flat, stable surface away from vents, windows, or fans. Drafts cause uneven burns and flickering flames, which reduce performance and can be distracting while you're deep in the zone. Also, keep your candle free of debris — no matches, wick bits, or dust inside the wax pool.
5. Know When to Say Goodbye
Once your candle has about 1/2" of wax left at the bottom, it’s time to call it. Burning past this point can overheat the jar and pose a safety risk. The good news? That’s the perfect excuse to try another scent in our collection.
Bonus: Repurpose the Jar
Our 8 oz candle jars are designed to be reused. Once you're done, pop the jar in the freezer for a few hours — the leftover wax will pop right out. Wash it with warm soapy water and use it for pens, paper clips, or even a tiny succulent. Functional and sustainable.
Why It Matters
We craft our candles to help you stay focused — whether you're debugging code or writing your thesis. But candle care is about more than just getting your money’s worth. It’s about maximizing your sensory environment so you can stay calm, sharp, and productive. Proper burning also ensures a cleaner, more even scent throw and a longer-lasting candle.
So next time you light your Deep Focus Fragrance candle, treat it right. Trim the wick. Melt to the edge. Don’t let it burn too long. And above all, enjoy the little ritual that helps set your mind in motion.
Stay lit, stay focused.
